Why should you not create tags on the go?

Before we tell you why you shouldn't create tags on the go, let us acknowledge the importance of tags. Tags are crucial for organizing and categorizing content. Your readers can easily explore all posts in their interested tags.

Tags are good for you but the problem begins when you don't manage your tags. In fact, if you create too many posts in short intervals, you might be tempted to create a tag everytime you don't find the tag you are looking for!

The problems with too many tags are the following:

  1. Thin Content: However, since the newly created tags might not have a lot of content associated, they become "thin content". Further, Google may penalize sites with a high number of thin content pages, impacting your site's authority and ranking.

  2. Duplicate Content: Redundant tags can lead to duplicate content issues since you might have similar tags associated with different pieces of content of the same topic.

Neither does Google like thin content nor does it like duplicate content.

As such, we recommend the following best practices

  1. Predefined Tag List

Identify the most important keywords for your brand and create tags for the different types of content you'd create for those keywords. Try to stick to these tags to avoid tag redundancy.

  1. Regular Tag Audit

Conduct regular tag audits to find duplicate tags and merge similar ones. You can also delete unused tags to avoid thin content. This will help you keep a clean and efficient content management system.

  1. Training

Train your content creators on the importance of tag management. Share the best practices with them to ensure your website follows best practices.
